Shahsavan tribe has a long history. In persian, Shahsavan means "those who defended the shah". The Shahsavan tribe lives in northern Iran around the city of Ardabil. More than five thousand families continue today with nomad traditions. They have separate summer and winter camps, and shortly used spring and autumn camps.
The Shahsavan tribes make thin carpets, saddle covers, bags, etc. essential for traveling. Their hand-knotted carpets are highly valued and durable. Simple geometric shapes are used. Often, the number of yarns is mixed with a camel wool. The carpets are thin but tight. In terms of the pattern, they are valued more than other tribal rugs. The colours often used are burgundy red, beige and dark blue, while newer carpets also have soft green, blue and brown tones.
