The Gashgai are Turkish speaking nomad tribes living in the region around the town of Shiraz in Southwest Iran. Gashgai rugs are hand-knotted in this area. The basic design is usually based on vertically arranged rhombs. The rugs are very densely knotted, so the background is normally very detailed, with stylised flowers, twigs, leaves, birds and other animals. The main colour is red in many shades, complemented with dark blue, brown and beige.
