Belutch rugs come from Khorasan in Eastern Iran. They are made mainly by Belutch tribes who live as nomads, semi-nomads or settled in villages. The rugs are knotted on horizontal looms using the Persian knotting technique. They typically have broad side borders, often in goat hair, and short woollen pile in rich red, rust, blue, black and brown. A Belutch rug is characterised by geometric symbols, stylised flowers and motifs like “Gül” - a distinctive octagonal pattern.
